Mirza Fakhrul’s brother attacked in Thakurgaon, car vandalized

Mirza Faisal Amin, general secretary of Thakurgaon district BNP and younger brother of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, came under attack by agitated party activists following the announcement of results at the bi-annual council of Baliadangi upazila BNP.

The incident took place around 9pm on Saturday at the premises of Samir Uddin College in Baliadangi.

The attackers reportedly hurled chairs and bamboo sticks at Mirza Faisal Amin and vandalized his vehicle.

Several BNP leaders and activists were injured during the chaos, creating tension in the area.

According to sources, the council was held throughout the day with voting proceeding peacefully.

However, unrest broke out in the evening over the delayed announcement of results.

Local activists confined Mirza Faisal Amin and other district leaders for nearly three hours, demanding an immediate declaration of the results and chanting slogans warning they would not allow anyone to leave without it.

Around 9pm, Mirza Faisal Amin finally announced the council results.

As he attempted to board his vehicle to leave the venue, a group of pre-positioned agitators launched a sudden attack.

A viral video footage shows chairs being thrown at him repeatedly.

When he tried to get into the car, the attackers also targeted the vehicle, causing significant damage.

His associates intervened to protect him, but several people were injured in the scuffle.

Md Rashed, owner of the vehicle and a travel companion of Faisal Amin, said: “This car is regularly used by Bhaiya (Mirza Faisal) and me. Today we came together to attend the Baliadangi BNP council. Everything was going peacefully, but as Bhaiya approached the car after announcing the results, he was suddenly attacked. My car was also vandalized.”

Police and upazila administration officials rushed to the scene following the incident.

Despite efforts to control the situation, the attackers fled before law enforcement could detain anyone.

Officer-in-Charge of Baliadangi police station, Md Shawkat Ali Sarkar, said: "The attack took place when the district BNP general secretary was getting into his car after announcing the results. Several individuals were injured. We arrived at the scene promptly, but the attackers have yet to be specifically identified. Investigation is underway.”

Baliadangi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Palash Kumar Debnath, said: “He (Mirza Faisal) came under attack while getting into his car and several people were injured. Efforts are ongoing to identify the perpetrators.”

A senior BNP leader, requesting anonymity, said that the district leadership had allowed democratic voting rather than imposing a top-down committee. Despite this, such an incident may have been orchestrated by conspirators attempting to tarnish the party’s image.

He added that the party would not tolerate such undemocratic and intolerant behaviour from within.

According to BNP sources, Mirza Faisal Amin is in stable condition.

The attack was immediately condemned by Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa) General Secretary Iqbal Hossain Prodhan, as well as leaders of the district and central BNP.
