Teesta, Kushiyara rivers near warning levels, flooding likely in nearby low-lying areas

The Teesta and Kushiyara rivers may rise near warning levels within the next 24 hours, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), potentially causing temporary flooding in low-lying areas of Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Sylhet.

Meanwhile, in Feni, the Selonia River was flowing above the danger mark on Thursday evening. The river’s level at the Subar Bazar point was recorded at 18cm above the danger line.

However, forecasts suggest that the water levels of both the Muhuri and Selonia rivers may start to decrease within the next 72 hours, offering hope for an improvement in the flood situation.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department stated that squally weather is unlikely over all maritime ports, the north Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coastal regions.

Consequently, the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower their cautionary signals.

In Feni, Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam told Dhaka Tribune, that river water is gradually receding.

“In the upazilas, especially in Fulgazi, water is still present but moving towards other areas,” he said.

So far, 8,133 people have taken shelter in 70 flood shelters across the district, with 164 shelters kept open.

Authorities are providing cooked meals to those affected.

Sagor Das, a resident of Parshuram upazila, reported that electricity has been out since Wednesday.

“There has been moderate rainfall throughout the day. Local volunteers are helping the stranded people,” he added.

Sanjib Sarker, upazilla nirbahi officer of Derai, Sunamganj, told Dhaka Tribune: “We had a meeting regarding flood preparedness. Rescue boats are ready in every upazila.”

He also confirmed that 133 flood shelters have been prepared in the upazila.
