Rail communication between Khulna and the rest of the country came to a complete standstill on Friday evening after a freight train derailed after its guard brake failed near Uthli railway station in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga.
The incident occurred around 5:50pm at the upper point of Uthli station.
According to Uthli station master Mintu Kumar Roy, the freight train was traveling from Mongla in Bagerhat to Sirajganj and had been waiting at Uthli station. Once the Rajshahi to Khulna-bound intercity Kapotaksha Express cleared the section, the freight train resumed its journey toward Sirajganj.
However, shortly after departure, near the station’s up point, the train’s guard brake failed and the train derailed, disrupting services on the line.
Authorities have informed the Pakshi divisional office of the situation. A rescue train has already set out from Ishwardi railway station to recover the derailed carriage. Until the recovery operation is complete, all train services along this route will remain suspended.
