Two children drowned in a pond in the Lahiri area of Baliadangi upazila in Thakurgaon.
The incident occurred on Friday morning, in Chhoto Lahiri village under Charol union of Baliadangi upazila, according to Baliadangi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shawkat Ali Sarkar.
The deceased are Siam Hossain, 6, son of Dabirul Islam, and Sohan Ali, 7, son of Safiul Islam; both are paternal cousins from the same village, the OC said.
Locals said that the two boys studied together at a local Hafezia madrasa.
Their fathers live in Dhaka for work, the locals added.
On Friday morning, after waking up, the brothers went out to play and entered the pond, where they drowned, and their family members later recovered their bodies from the water.
Teachers of Lahiri Tawqa Madrasa said: “Sohan and Siam were polite, devout, and talented students. We are deeply saddened by their untimely deaths.”
Their grandmother Mahamuda said: “Each of the two brothers had only one child. Now, everything is lost.”
A wave of mourning has swept over both families.
The OC said that police had been dispatched to the scene.
