Locals on Sunday lynched a man in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar over allegations of attempting to rape and stabbing a woman.
The deceased, Abdul Mannan, 26, was a resident of the Kombonia area under Khuniapalong union of the upazila, confirmed Ramu police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Taibur Rahman.
According to police and local sources, Mannan entered a woman’s house in the morning and attempted to rape her.
When he failed, he stabbed the woman, sources added.
Hearing her screams, neighbours reportedly rushed in, caught Mannan as he tried to flee, and hacked him, killing him on the spot.
The injured woman was admitted to Ramu Upazila Health Complex.
Taibur said police and army personnel went to the scene upon receiving the information.
He added that Mannan was an active member of a robbery gang and was killed following the attempted rape and stabbing of a woman.
Ramu police station Inspector Mohammad Farid said the body was recovered and sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Mannan had multiple cases against him, including murder, robbery, and abduction, he added.
