Another injured person dies following clash between two BNP factions in Kaliganj

Another person injured in a clash between two rival BNP factions over establishing dominance in the Nakobaria area of Kaliganj upazila in Jhenaidah has died while undergoing treatment.

The deceased has been identified as Yunus Ali, 60, who passed away on Wednesday morning at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Yunus, who was the son of the late Habibar Rahman from Nakobaria village in the upazila, was confirmed dead by his nephew, Advocate Zillur Rahman.

Following the clash, around 35 to 40 houses across different villages in the union were reportedly vandalized, looted, and set on fire.

On the same day as the clash, Yunus's brother, Mohabbat Ali, was also killed.

A case was filed at Kaliganj police station over Mohabbat’s death by his son Enamul Haque.

The case names 58 individuals and accuses another 30 to 40 unidentified persons.

Locals said a long-standing dispute over social dominance had existed between Nazrul Islam Mollah and his rival Arif Hossain in Jamal union.

On Sunday morning, Nazrul’s supporters allegedly launched an attack in Nakobaria village.

Arif's supporters resisted, leading to a violent clash between the two groups using locally made weapons, injuring at least five people.

One of the injured, Mohabbat Hossain, was in critical condition and was referred to Faridpur Hospital, where he later died on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, locals alleged that despite informing the police about possible retaliatory attacks in the preceding days, no action was taken.

Shortly before the clash, the police had been alerted, however, no preventive measures were implemented.

When the looting and vandalism occurred, police were reportedly present in the union but failed to act.

Tariqul Islam from Chhoto Talian village said: “After news of Mohabbat Ali’s death reached the area in the afternoon, houses in several villages across the union were vandalized and looted. Cattle, paddy, and furniture were taken. My family is in great distress. There is not even a glass left to drink water from.”

Jolly Khatun, a woman from the Natopara area, said that around 20 to 30 people suddenly stormed into her home on Monday afternoon, vandalized and looted it.

Her sister’s wedding jewelry was taken, and the television, refrigerator, and everything in the house were smashed.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj police station Shahidul Islam Howlader said: “Yunus Ali, who was injured in the clash between the two factions, has died. This brings the death toll in the incident to two. Police are working to bring the situation under control. However, no one informed me in advance about fears of a clash.”
