An eight-month-old baby died when a couple jumped off a moving train after a fire broke out in a bogie in Lohagara upazila of Chittagong on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Md Hamadan, son of Abdur Razzak from Cox’s Bazar.
The fire broke out in a bogie of the Cox’s Bazar-bound Probal Express around 7:45pm, when the train reached Padua under Lohagara upazila, causing panic among passengers.
At one stage, Abdur Razzak, 26, and his wife Liza Akter, 20, jumped off the moving train with their eight-month-old baby, leaving all three injured.
They were taken to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared the baby dead, said Zahed Hossain, sub-inspector of Lohagara police station.
Abdur Razzak and his family had gone to Gunagari in Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong to visit his in-laws and met with the tragic incident while returning home.
Lohagara Station Master Didar Hossain said the fire was extinguished within 15 to 20 minutes and that it might have originated from a short circuit.
