A man in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila, killed his pregnant wife while they were riding a Nagordola at a local fair.
The incident occurred around 7:45pm on Monday night in Eklashpur Union.
Police have detained the accused husband immediately after the incident.
The victim, 19-year-old Lucky Begum, was five months pregnant. She was the daughter of Monsur Ali from the Bede community in Kalapol area.
Her husband, Md Shakib, son of Mongol from Mannan Nagar Bede community in Noakhali Sadar upazila, has been taken into custody.
According to the victim’s mother, Shefali Begum, Lucky and Shakib had been married for a year in an arranged marriage. The couple had returned to Lucky’s parental home about 15 days ago.
A heated argument broke out between them on Sunday, during which Shakib beat Lucky, tore her clothes, and smashed his own mobile phone in anger.
On Monday evening, Shakib and some of his family members took Lucky to the fair. Witnesses reported that while riding the Nagordola together, Shakib suddenly pulled out a knife and slit his wife's throat.
Shakib reportedly rushed his wife to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital in a critical condition, where doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
Investigation Officer Md Habibur Rahman from Begumganj police station confirmed the detention and said that the murder appeared to be the result of an ongoing domestic conflict.
"We have detained the accused husband. The body has been sent to the Noakhali General Hospital morgue for post-mortem. Legal proceedings are underway based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family," he added.
