Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday joined nearly 100,000 Rohingya refugees for iftar at a refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar.
The iftar gathering was organized at the initiative of the chief adviser, as per Bangla Tribune.
Earlier, the chartered flight carrying Professor Yunus and Guterres landed at Cox’s Bazar Airport at 12:48pm on Friday.
As part of the visit, the Chief Adviser inaugurated a project at Cox’s Bazar Airport and inspected the Khurushkul Climate Refugee Centre.
Later, Dr Muhammad Yunus and António Guterres participated in the iftar with nearly 100,000 Rohingya refugees in Ukhiya.
After visiting the Rohingya camp in Ukhiya in the afternoon, António Guterres said: “I have received two clear messages from my visit to the Rohingya camp. First, the displaced Rohingya community wants to return to Myanmar. The international community must ensure the restoration of peace in Myanmar and guarantee the rights of the Rohingyas so that they do not face any form of discrimination.”
The UN secretary-general further said: “Secondly, the Rohingya refugees seek better living conditions in the camps. Unfortunately, many countries, including the United States, have recently made drastic cuts to humanitarian aid. As a result, we have had to reduce food rations in our relief efforts. I have pledged to do everything in my power. I will speak with as many countries as possible to secure funding and prevent further deterioration of the situation.”
Following their visit and iftar, the chief adviser and the UN secretary-general will return to Dhaka together in the evening.
