In Chittagong's Karnaphuli Upazila, a man was handed over to the police by locals after he was beaten for allegedly attempting to rape his 16-year-old sister-in-law.
The incident occurred around 1am on Saturday in Ichanagar village, Charpatharghata, but it came to light on Monday night.
The accused, Md Omar Faruk, 28, son of Md Nasir from the Seynartek area of Charpatharghata, was arrested following the incident.
According to locals, Omar Faruk attempted to assault his sister-in-law early Saturday morning. While the matter was initially resolved within the family, a neighbor learned of the incident on Monday night. With the help of local youths, the neighbor detained Faruk, who was then beaten by the crowd.
A large group of people gathered, demanding justice and punishment for the accused. Eventually, he was handed over to the police. The victim's father filed a case against Faruk at the Karnaphuli Police Station, charging him with attempted rape under the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act.
Muhammad Sharif, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Karnaphuli Police Station, said: "Faruk had gone to his in-laws' house last Saturday. Late at night, when everyone was asleep, he entered his sister-in-law's room and attempted to rape her. When the girl screamed, Faruk fled. The incident came to light on Monday night, prompting locals to detain him and inform the police. We arrested him, and the victim's father has since filed a case against his son-in-law for attempted rape."
