Protest halts remand hearing in Magura child rape case

A remand hearing for those accused in a case filed over the rape of an eight-year-old girl in Magura could not be held due to protests by students on the court premises on Sunday.

Law enforcement failed to produce the accused in court due to security concerns, and the remand hearing could not be held as a result.

Earlier in the day, students started a procession from Magura Govt HSS College and marched towards the Magura Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.

Later, they blocked the Dhaka-Khulna highway at Bhaina bus stand.

Ayub Ali, officer-in-charge of Magura Sadar police station, said the mother of the survivor filed a case against four people in this connection on Saturday afternoon.

The arrestees are Hitu Sheikh, 50, Sajib Sheikh, 22, Ratul Sheikh, 25 and Zayeda Khatun, 40, of Nijnanduali village in Magura Sadar upazila.

The accused were sent to jail after the police produced them before the court on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, a group of students surrounded Magura Sadar police station, demanding justice.

The eight-year-old girl, a class 3 student, was raped when she visited her sister’s in-laws’ house in Nijnanduali village in Magura.

She went to bed with her sister at night, but in the dead of night, her sister found her missing and began searching for her.

After a frantic search, the girl was found unconscious a few yards away from the house.

She was initially admitted to Magura General Hospital and later transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorated.

On Thursday, she was moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) before being shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
