Magura rape: Sit-in at court demands rapists' execution

Students and locals in Magura have staged a sit-in at the court premises, demanding the execution of the accused in the rape case of the 8-year old child.

They have declared that they will not leave until a death sentence is issued within 24 hours.

On Sunday morning, following a protest march, they gathered in front of the Magura Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.

Shayer Hasan Togor, general secretary of the Magura District Lawyers’ Association, joined the demonstration and said: “We promise that no lawyer in Magura will stand in court to defend the rapists.”

Speakers at the protest said the rapists have shown such audacity because they got away with their crimes in the past. The culprits must be sentenced to death within 24 hours, or we will not leave.

Earlier in the day, the High Court ordered the immediate removal of all photos of the child rape survivor in Magura from social media, directing the BTRC to enforce the order without delay.

Taking cognizance of a newspaper report, the High Court bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury issued the order on Sunday.

On Wednesday, an 8-year-old child was raped at her sister's house in Magura.

The child’s condition is critical, and she was transferred from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital to CMH Hospital.

In connection with the incident, Magura police have arrested four people so far.
