Jagannath University students have detained Professor Dr Milton Biswas, a pro-Awami League academic and former chairman of the Bengali Department, known for his opposition to the July uprising.
On Wednesday, Professor Milton Biswas arrived at the Jagannath University (JU) campus to submit an application to the general secretary of the JU Teachers' Association, Professor Dr Md Rois Uddin, requesting exemption from a legal case.
However, he was detained by students in front of the university's Shaheed Minar.
Currently, Professor Milton Biswas and an individual identified as his relative, Jon Sushanto Biswas, are being held at the university's proctor office.
Sources confirm that Professor Milton Biswas, a well-known pro-Awami League figure, serves as the convener of the Joy Bangla Teachers' Association at Jagannath University and is also the secretary of the Bangladesh Progressive Columnists' Forum.
According to eyewitnesses and the students involved in the detention, Professor Milton Biswas has two cases filed against him related to attacks during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
He came to the university carrying a letter seeking exemption from these cases.
He was accompanied by an individual identified as his relative, Jon Sushanto Biswas, who allegedly introduced himself as a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student unit of the BNP.
However, it was later revealed that he holds no official position within the organization.
Upon inspecting Jon Sushanto Biswas's mobile phone, students discovered contact details of a JU student and JCD leader Abu Bakar.
Witnesses allege that Professor Milton Biswas arrived on campus with the help of Abu Bakar.
In response, Professor Milton Biswas said: "I have two cases against me, and I came to submit a letter to Professor Rois Uddin requesting exemption."
Meanwhile, Jon Sushanto Biswas clarified: "I am not a member of JCD. I simply accompanied Professor Milton Biswas. It was my mistake."
Regarding the incident, Professor Dr Rois Uddin, said: "He came to me with an application for case exemption, and I advised him to submit it to the teachers' association office. This incident occurred after he left my office."
