Several buildings and halls at Khulna University have been renamed.
Among them, the Syed Nazrul Islam Administrative Building has been renamed after the university's first Vice-Chancellor, Golam Rahman.
On Wednesday at 9:30am, the nameplate of the "Professor Dr Golam Rahman Administrative Building" was unveiled.
The unveiling was done by Professor Dr Golam Rahman, the university's first Vice-Chancellor.
In a brief speech, he highlighted various significant aspects of Khulna University's early journey.
He reminisced about the days of opening new disciplines and constructing residential halls and administrative buildings.
Addressing the new generation, he said: "Your movement has brought about a great revolution, leading to the establishment of a new Bangladesh. Now, you must unite to contribute to nation-building and play your role in developing the country and its people."
He further said: "I have never asked for anything from the university. My only expectation was for its students to establish themselves in various fields both at home and abroad. Today, the honor bestowed upon me by the students and the university administration makes me proud and grateful."
Khulna University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim, said: "Through the July Revolution, our new journey has been made smoother. Based on the demands of students, the names of university buildings are being changed. The contribution of Professor Dr Golam Rahman in the establishment and advancement of Khulna University is unforgettable. That is why the old administrative building has been renamed in his honor."
He also added: "Since the inception of Khulna University, all operations were conducted from this building. The first Vice-Chancellor worked from here. Additionally, during the Liberation War, this building served as a radio center. Given its historical significance, and in response to student demands, the Syndicate has approved the new name."
According to a press release from Khulna University, a Syndicate meeting on February 8 approved the renaming of several university buildings and halls.
The Renamed Buildings and Halls:
- Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall → Bir Shrestha Mohammad Ruhul Amin Hall
- Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall → Bijoy 24 Hall
- Satyendra Nath Bose Academic Building → Academic Building 1
- Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building → Academic Building 2
- Poet Jibanananda Das Academic Building → Academic Building 3
- Joy Bangla Building → Academic Building 4
- Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Administrative Building → Administrative Building
- Shaheed Intellectual Dr Aleem Chowdhury Medical Center → Khulna University Medical Center
- Sultana Kamal Gymnasium → Khulna University Gymnasium
- Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray Central Research Laboratory → Khulna University Central Research Laboratory
Additionally, the names of three teachers' quarters have also been changed.
