Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam said that security measures for this year’s Bishwa Ijtema have been significantly strengthened, including an expansion of space to ensure safety.
"After the first phase, once we are confident that the entire Ijtema area is secure and there are no potential threats, we will invite them (Maulana Saad’s followers) to join. That is why we have kept the space available. This expansion has been done with everyone's consent for security reasons," he told reporters after inspecting the Ijtema grounds at 11:30am on Wednesday.
He added: "Our entire security system is prepared to respond effectively. Maulana Mahfuz mentioned that there are 10,000 volunteers taking charge, as it is their religious duty, while we are cooperating as the state’s security force. Compared to previous years, our management and security systems are much stronger. RAB's security measures have also been reinforced. With everyone’s cooperation, we are confident in handling any sabotage attempts.”
Discussing security strategies, the IGP outlined that law enforcement has divided security into five sectors in coordination with agencies including RAB, DGFI, NSI, the deputy commissioner’s office, city corporation, roads and highways, fire service, and the Army.
Key security measures include:
- Surveillance: Drone monitoring for real-time assessment of any incidents.
- Watchtowers: 16 watchtowers equipped with binoculars for extensive field surveillance.
- Control Centres: 15 sub-control rooms for rapid response.
- CCTV Monitoring: 335 cameras deployed across the site.
- Personnel Deployment: 35 rooftop units, 53 fixed brigades, and 20 mobile teams on round-the-clock duty.
- Check Posts: 20 checkpoints to prevent unauthorized entry.
- Traffic Management: From January 31 to February 2, cargo trucks will not be allowed in the area. On the day of the main prayer, all vehicles will be restricted to ensure a smooth experience for devotees.
Additionally, undercover officers have been deployed, and approximately 6,000 uniformed police personnel are on duty. Helicopter patrols, bomb disposal units, and K9 squads will also be on standby.
Addressing reporters, the IGP emphasized the role of the media in gathering feedback. Referring to a previous incident at the Ijtema ground, he commended the responsible behaviour of attendees.
"The followers of Maulana Zubair will conduct their congregation from January 31 to February 5, while the other group will hold theirs from February 14 to 16. There is no conflict or dispute over this arrangement. Both groups will observe their gatherings peacefully, and with collective cooperation, we will ensure a secure and smooth Ijtema," he said.
