24 ex-AL MPs' luxury cars auctioned in Chittagong

The Chittagong Customs House has initiated an online auction for 44 vehicles, including 24 luxury cars imported by former members of parliament (MPs) from the ousted Awami League (AL) government under duty-free privileges.

The auction process began on Monday and will remain open for bidding until 2:00pm on February 16.

Proceeds from the sale of these high-CC vehicles will be deposited into the government treasury.

Revenue Officer Bijon Kumar Talukder said that interested bidders can view the auction catalogue on the e-auction website starting on Monday.

He said: “The tender box will be opened on February 17, and bidders can inspect the vehicles on-site between February 2 and 4.”

According to the Chittagong Customs House, 24 of the vehicles are brand-new Land Cruisers, imported under duty-free facilities by former AL MPs.

Despite multiple reminders, the former MPs have failed to clear the imported vehicles.

In addition to the luxury cars, the auction includes 10 dump trucks, five Harriers, two RAV4s, a Square, and two other Land Cruisers.

Assistant Commissioner Md Shakib Hossain said that 24 out of the 31 vehicles imported by former MPs under duty-free privileges have been listed for auction.

He added that the remaining seven vehicles are still under process and will be auctioned once formalities are completed.

The MPs whose vehicles are being auctioned include former State Minister for Information Mohammad Ali Arafat, Muhammad Saiful Islam, Muhammad Shahjahan Omar, Sourendra Nath Chakraborty, Anupam Shahjahan Joy, Sajjadul Hasan, Saddam Hossain (Pavel), Naser Shahriar Zahedi, Abul Kalam Azad, Abdul Motaleb, Mohammad Abdul Wahed, Touhiduzzaman, Shah Sarwar Kabir, SAK Ekramuzzaman, SM Al Mamun, SM Kamal Hossain, Mujibur Rahman, Asaduzzaman, and Akhtaruzzaman.
