Chittagong Swechhasebak Dal leader expelled for assaulting police officer

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) Swechhasebak Dal has expelled Shahidul Islam Shahid, a local leader, for his involvement in the physical assault of Md Nezam Uddin, a former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station in Chittagong.

The expulsion was officially announced on Tuesday through a press release signed by Swechhasebak Dal's Office Secretary, M Abu Bakkar Raju.

The decision, authorized by the organization's Chittagong Metropolitan President HM Rashid Khan and General Secretary Belayet Hossain Bulu, cited Shahid's "engagement in activities inconsistent with party discipline" as the primary reason for his removal from all positions, including his primary membership.

The incident occurred on Monday, when Nezam Uddin arrived near the passport office in the Panchlaish residential area to pick up his son from school.

As he exited his vehicle, Shahid, along with a group of Swechhasebak Dal activists, confronted him.

The activists accused him of past misconduct during his tenure as OC and expressed anger over alleged mistreatment.

The situation escalated into a physical violance, during which the activists reportedly tore Nezam's shirt and subjected him to physical abuse.

A video circulating on social media shows the activists grabbing him by the collar and dragging him, while others appear to assault him.

Law enforcement intervened promptly, rescuing Nezam and ensuring his safety.

He was later admitted to the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Hospital for medical care.

Md Nezam Uddin has previously held several significant postings, including serving as OC of Kotwali, Bakalia and Sadarghat police stations in Chittagong.

He was recently transferred from Patiya Police Station to Comilla, where he now serves as an inspector with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The incident has sparked widespread criticism and highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding Nezam’s earlier roles in law enforcement.
