A total of 64 Indian fishermen detained in the Bagerhat prison for trespassing into Bangladeshi waters have been released.
The fishermen were freed from Bagerhat prison and transported to Mongla under special security provided by the Coast Guard on Thursday.
Family members of the released fishermen, who were present outside the prison, expressed their gratitude to the Bangladesh government.
It has been reported that the fishermen will be handed over to the Indian Coast Guard on Sunday, following a meeting between the Bangladeshi and Indian Coast Guards.
Bagerhat Jail Superintendent Shankar Kumar Majumder said that 48 fishermen were sent to prison on October 18 last year and another 16 on November 21, based on court orders.
They were all released on Thursday.
Lieutenant BN Mushfiq-Us-Saleheen, Media Officer of the Coast Guard Western Zone, confirmed that the released fishermen have been transported to Mongla under special security.
They will be handed over to the Indian Coast Guard during a bilateral meeting in Indian waters on Sunday.
