Water transport workers call off strike

The strike called by cargo vessel workers in response to the killing of seven people on a ship in Chandpur has been suspended.

The matter was confirmed by Shah Alam, president of the Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation, at 9:30pm on Saturday.

He said: "The program regarding the seven killings has been suspended. Vessel operations on the river are now back to normal. The reasons will be disclosed later."

Earlier, the strike began at midnight last Thursday, halting all types of cargo vessel operations nationwide.

The disruption persisted through Saturday, leading to a standstill at ports.

Over a million tons of goods, including essential commodities and fuel, remained stuck awaiting unloading.

On Monday five bodies were recovered, and three critically injured individuals were rescued from the vessel MV Al Bakhera on the Meghna River in Haimchar, Chandpur. Two of the injured later died at the hospital.

All were crew members of the vessel.

The ship's owner, Mahbub Morshed, filed a case at Haimchar police station against unidentified individuals on charges of murder and robbery.

Subsequently, RAB apprehended Akash Mondal, alias Irfan, from Chitalmari, Bagerhat.

He was presented to Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Farhan Sadiq’s court by River Police Inspector Md Kalam Kha, where a seven-day remand was granted.
