Case filed over deadly clash at Ijtema ground in Tongi

A murder case has been filed at Tongi West Police Station following a fatal clash between two factions of Tablighi Jamaat at the Tongi Bishwa Ijtema grounds that resulted in deaths of four people.

The case, which includes 29 named individuals and several hundred unnamed individuals, was filed on Thursday by SM Alam Hossain, Tongi West Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habib Iskandar confirmed.

The complainant, SM Alam Hossain is an associate of the Alami Shura in the Zubair faction in Kishoreganj.

According to the FIR, the complainant alleged that the accused, followers of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, violated the decisions made during meetings at the Home Ministry on November 4 and 7.

They allegedly tried to tarnish Islam's image and embarrass the government by organizing a gathering of the old faction from December 20 to 24 at the Tongi Ijtema grounds, contrary to government decisions. They used Facebook, YouTube, and other social media platforms for propaganda.

The main accused, Syed Wasiful Islam, reportedly sent a letter to Saad's followers nationwide, encouraging them to attend the gathering with flashlights and hand mics.

Another accused, Abdullah Mansur, allegedly went live on Facebook, threatening to disrupt the first phase of Bishwa Ijtema if Maulana Saad was not allowed or if their gathering was prevented.

Their provocative activities led to an attack on Alami Shura associates at around 3am on Wednesday, while they were asleep or on guard, the case document says.
