Police six individuals in connection with the murder of university student Tajbir Hossain, also known as Shihan, 26, in Kaliakair, Gazipur.
The breakthrough in the case came after investigators tracked his stolen mobile phone, leading to a series of arrests.
The murder occurred early Thursday morning near Hanif Spinning Mill on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway while Tajbir was on his way to work.
At a press conference, police revealed that East West University student Tajbir Hossain fell victim to robbers near Hanif Spinning Mill in Mouchaq early Thursday morning.
The robbers stabbed him in the knee and stole his mobile phone, student ID card, bank cards, wallet, and bag. Tajbir succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
After the case was filed, police began efforts to identify and arrest those involved in the murder.
Initially, police recovered Tajbir’s phone from Anwar Hossain, who was involved in trading stolen phones.
Anwar was arrested, and police used information technology to identify the main suspects.
On Monday night, police conducted raids in Salna, Konabari, Basan, and Tongi areas, leading to the arrests.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Aminul Islam stated that the suspects are members of a robbery gang.
Preliminary interrogations revealed that they carried out robberies using CNG-run auto-rickshaws in areas like Chandra, Mouchak, Konabari, Chourasta, and Tongi.
Police recovered Tajbir’s mobile phone, East West University student ID card, bank cards, four other mobile phones, and cash from the suspects.
Authorities plan to seek their remand through the court.
