Police have arrested six individuals in connection with the murder of East West University student Tajbir Hossain Shihan, 26, in Kaliakair, Gazipur.
The arrestees include drivers and helpers from Gazipur's Takwa and Azmeri Glory transport services, as well as CNG drivers.
They are professional muggers who have been directly involved in mugging activities for the past two years.
The information was confirmed by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime & Ops) Aminul Islam during a press conference at the Superintendent of Police office at noon on Tuesday.
On Monday night, police identified the suspects using CCTV footage and technology.
Following confirmation of their locations, Kaliakair police conducted raids in areas including Salna, Basan, Konabari, and Tongi in Gazipur Metropolitan and arrested them.
The arrestees are: Sarwar Hossain Sharu, 28, a Takwa Paribahan driver and son of Halim Uddin from Amgachihanda village in Dhobaura, Mymensingh; Nazim Uddin Noyon, 35, a CNG driver and son of Ali Azgar from Kashiabari village in Roumari, Kurigram; Saiful Islam, 42, a CNG driver and son of Azgar Ali from Madhupur village in Ulipur, Kurigram; Jewel, 24, a helper of Azmeri Glory Paribahan and son of deceased Abdul Malek from Purbo Jamertoli village in Lakshmipur district; Milon, 27, a staff of Takwa Paribahan and son of Abdul Jalil from Mohanpur village in Akkelpur, Joypurhat; and, Anwar Hossain, 35, a tea seller, son of deceased Sultan Bayati from Aminabad village in Charfashion, Bhola.
Police recovered the CNG vehicle used for the mugging, machetes, knives, and stolen goods.
At the press conference, Additional Superintendent of Police Aminul Islam explained that on Thursday at around 5:15am, Shihan left his home.
Near Hanif Spinning Mill in Mauchak, Kaliakair on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, the suspects blocked Shihan and truck driver Masudur Rahman, 46.
The suspects stabbed Shihan in the knee, killing him on the spot.
They took his mobile phone, university ID card, visa card, wallet, and bag.
The arrested also stabbed Masudur Rahman and robbed his mobile phone and wallet.
The injured driver received treatment at Sufia Hospital.
The suspects confessed during preliminary questioning that they are professional muggers.
Over the last two years, they have been committing robberies using CNG vehicles across areas including Chandra, Mauchak, Konabari, Chandana Chowrasta, Tongi, Salna, and Sreepur in Gazipur.
