A clash erupted on Monday between two factions of the BNP in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, during a Victory Day program over opposing slogans.
The incident, which involved the throwing of bricks and stones, left at least 12 people injured.
Later, police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
The altercation occurred around 11:30am between supporters of Sonargaon BNP President Azharul Islam Mannan and former member of parliament Md Rezaul Karim.
Most of the injured individuals received treatment at Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex.
Meanwhile, a Jubo Dal activist, Ratan, who was reportedly hacked, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, as confirmed by BNP Sonargaon Publicity Secretary Selim Hossain.
According to party and local sources, a long-standing political rivalry exists between Rezaul Karim, the former MP for Narayanganj-3, and Azharul Islam Mannan, president of the BNP upazila unit.
Both factions gathered in the upazila in the morning to pay tribute at the Shaheed Minar as part of Victory Day programs.
While preparing to march to the Shaheed Minar, an argument broke out over slogans, escalating into violence.
Azharul Islam Mannan said: “Rezaul’s supporters provoked our activists with instigating remarks. This led to heated tensions, and in retaliation, their faction attacked, leaving some of our activists injured.”
Khondaker Abu Zafar, former president of Sonargaon BNP, condemned the incident, saying: “Mannan’s supporters initiated the attack. We will file a complaint against him at the central level.”
Md Rezaul Karim's comments were not available when the report was being published.
Sonargaon police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abdul Bari said: “The incident stemmed from a long-standing political rivalry, leading to a scuffle and brick-throwing.
"We brought the situation under control promptly. However, we have heard reports of a Jubo Dal leader being hacked. Legal action will be taken if a formal complaint is filed.”
