Jahangir calls for media vigilance against propaganda

Interim government Home Affairs Adviser, retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam, has accused Indian media of spreading misinformation and propaganda about Bangladesh.

He urged journalists to counter these false narratives by presenting the truth.

“The media of the neighbouring country is promoting many lies about us. Only you, the journalists, can combat this by highlighting the facts,” he said during a visit to Pirganj's Babanpur village on Monday.

The adviser was there to pay respects at the grave of Abu Sayed, who was killed in an anti-discrimination movement. After meeting with the bereaved family, he addressed the media.

Home Adviser said that there is no reason to panic regarding the border situation.

He assured: "We are always prepared to handle any situation."

The Home Advisor sought cooperation from journalists to ensure there is no panic concerning the border.

On India's part, it has been noted that some areas along the border have seen BGB deployment.

He clarified, "Elections are being held in some areas of West Bengal, India. During this period, we redeployed BGB from certain locations, and the new deployment is simply a part of that adjustment, nothing else."

“Publish the truth, and those spreading false stories will be exposed,” he appealed to journalists.

Addressing Abu Sayed's murder, the adviser praised his bravery and confirmed that a foundation is being established in Sayed’s name in Pirganj. “We will provide all necessary support for this foundation,” he assured.

In connection to the murder case, Jahangir Alam said that three suspects have already been arrested. “We will take steps to expedite the trial. If the media or law enforcement can identify other suspects still at large, they will be brought to justice. No one will be spared.”

When questioned about the law and order situation in the country, he likened it to the aftermath of a storm, explaining that it takes time to recover and restore normalcy. “We need time. While the situation has improved compared to before, it will gradually get better,” he added.

He called on the public to remain patient and emphasized the need for unity in addressing the country’s challenges. “For the development of the nation, we must all work together. I urge the media to report the truth. If you uncover any corruption involving me, expose it,” he concluded.
