A new political party, called the Bangladesh Democratic Party (BDP), has been launched in Goplaganj.
The party leaders held a press conference at the Madhumati Park Conference Hall in Chapaail, Gopalganj, to announce the formation of the new organization, on Saturday.
The written statement at the press conference was read by Saifur Rashid Chowdhury, the convenor of the organization and the former General Secretary of the Gopalganj District branch of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSoD, Inu).
Saifur Rashid Chowdhury said: "There are many political parties in Bangladesh. Whichever party has come to power, none of them has practiced true democracy. They have held mock elections to cling to power. We have observed that in the name of politics, dynastic rule has been established. As a result, even after so many years of independence, democracy has not become institutionalized in Bangladesh. Our goal is to restore the people's rights through the practice of genuine democracy."
He further stated: "Initially, we have started our activities in ten districts, and a four-member convening committee has been formed."
During the press conference, he presented a 32-point proposal to accelerate the on-going democratic movement.
Notable points of the proposal include:
- Direct election of the president by the people
- Candidates in parliamentary elections must be nominated by their parties only after being elected by the majority vote of party members
- Increasing national income from the blue economy
- Ensuring transparency and fairness in job recruitment
- Updating and modernizing the education system.
