5 arrested in Savar over holding protest rally under Jubo League banner

Police have arrested five members of the banned organization Chhatra League who held a protest rally under the banner of the Jubo League in Ashulia of Savar.  

They have been accused on charge of attempting to destabilize the garment sector and engage in subversive activities.

On Tuesday, police produced them to Dhaka court with a seven-day remand petition.

Earlier, on Monday night, police conducted raids in various areas of Ashulia and made the arrests.

The arrested individuals are Roman Rana, 36, Mohsin, 20, Babu, 20, Mirazul Islam, 19, and Sajid, 19. They were reportedly residing in a rented house in Ashulia's Jamgara area.

The protest rally took place at the Gorat area, located on the border between Ashulia and Gazipur, on Monday noon.

According to police, the rally lasted for two to three minutes. Afterward, the participants fled to various locations, including Gazipur.

A video of the rally was obtained by this reporter.

The video shows a group of 10-15 people participating in the rally, all wearing masks.

The banner displayed images of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina, as well as Jubo League President Fazle Shams Parash and General Secretary Moinul Hasan Khan Nikil.

The banner read "Protest Rally Organized by Ashulia Thana Jubo League."

The protesters chanted slogans such as "Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu," and "If anything happens to Sheikh Hasina, fire will burn in every home."

After the incident, a team of police led by Additional Superintendent of Police Shahinur Kabir from the Dhaka District Police’s Savar Circle, launched an operation and arrested the five people.

The police filed a case against them under the Speedy Trial Act and the law regarding disruption of public order.

Additional Superintendent of Police Shahinur Kabir said that around 12:30pm, a flash rally was organized by 10 to 15 individuals in Ashulia's Gorat area.

"Their main intention was to create instability and engage in subversive activities. We immediately received the information and, after identifying them through the video, launched an overnight operation to arrest the five individuals," he said.
