Two students were released on bail who were arrested following searching a woman's bag, which led to local anger.
The police rescued them from the situation and took them to the station.
This incident occurred around midnight on Monday in the Cinema Palace area of the Kotwali police station in Chittagong.
The two students, identified as Mohammad Sabbir and Mohammad Raihan, are reportedly students of Chittagong University (CU), according to a report by the media outlet Prothom Alo.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the two students chased a few women in the Cinema Palace area, suspecting them to be sex workers. One woman sought refuge in a hotel.
The students followed her into the hotel but could not find her.
They then came out of the hotel and stopped another woman behind a bus, where they searched her bag to check if it contained contraceptives.
At this point, the woman's husband arrived on the scene, and the local people became enraged, attempting to beat the students.
The police were alerted, and they rescued the two students, taking them to the police station station.
They were later released after giving a written assurance.
Regarding the incident, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of the city police, Tarek Aziz, said: “The woman and her husband came to the police station, but they did not file any complaint. Hence, the two students were released after giving an assurance.”
He also mentioned that the students had identified themselves as coordinators, but it could not be confirmed.
He added, "It is not the student's job to search people's bags. No one should take the law into their own hands."
However, the media outlet also reported that attempts to contact Russell Ahmed, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Chittagong, were unsuccessful.
