Shahin Alom from Satkhira to highlight coastal issues at COP-29

Shahin Alom, 23, a climate activist from Satkhira, is set to speak about the impact of climate change on coastal communities at COP-29.

The United Nations Climate Conference will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, starting from Monday, where Shaheen will present the struggles faced by people living along the coastal areas of Satkhira, which have been severely impacted by climate change.

Shahin Alom, who is also the Dhaka Division Coordinator of the environmental organization Youthnet for Climate Justice, will attend COP-29 under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's banner, with financial support from the Nature Conservation Management (NACOM).

He is currently studying Sociology and Social Work at the University of Bangladesh.

Whenever coastal communities face disasters or cyclones, Shaheen has been there to offer assistance.

Having witnessed numerous cyclones such as Aila, Amphan, Bulbul, and Dana, this young climate worker has travelled across the coastal areas, helping people in need.

He has arranged nutritious food for pregnant women and provided sanitary napkins to marginalized girls in the region.

His constant support during various crises has earned him the title "Coastal Express" (Upakul Express) among the people of the region.

Shahin credits the harsh coastal environment for shaping him into a climate activist.

"I have worked for the welfare of people, considering the suffering of coastal residents as my own. Whether it's providing clean drinking water, nutritious food for children, or toys, I’ve always been there. I believe that if we don't stand by each other, no one else will fight for us," he said.

This is Shahin’s first opportunity to represent the struggles of his region on a global platform.

Speaking about the conference, he said: “This is not just participation in an international conference, but a huge opportunity to present the challenges faced by the southwestern coastal region of the country. Due to climate change, the Satkhira coastal area is becoming uninhabitable. It's a matter of life and death. I will present our situation to the world leaders. Our one demand is that developed countries should not impose the cost of their past mistakes on us."

Shahin further emphasized that to tackle the adverse effects of climate change, coordinated efforts are required at both local and international levels, which would provide hope for the coastal population.

He stressed the need for developed countries to honour their aid promises and ensure financial assistance.

Additionally, he called on these countries to reduce their carbon emissions to zero.

Despite the many challenges, Shahin remains hopeful that the people of the region will have a chance to survive.

His wish is that the coastal population should not have to leave their homes during every disaster or depend on others for help.

He dreams of a future where children do not fall behind, and they have a bright future.

Shahin aspires to continue working as a pillar of support for the people of this region in the future.

He expressed his determination to keep working for the coastal communities, hoping to become a reliable support system for them.
