Village doctor lynched in Narsingdi over trifling matter

A village doctor has allegedly been beaten to death over a trifling matter in Narsingdi’s Raipura Upazila.

The murder occurred in the Dighalia Kandi area of Banshgari Union around 10pm on Friday.

Raipura police station officer-in-charge Abdul Jabbar confirmed the matter.

The deceased was identified as Md Abdullah, 52, son of late Abdus Samad.

Quoting to family sources, the police official said Abdullah's younger son Sajeeb was watching a badminton match near his home on Friday evening. Sajeeb got into a fight with Anwar, the son of another local named Ali Hossain.

Following the incident, Anwar and 10 to 15 of his accomplices attacked Sajeeb's house around 9:45pm. Sajeeb's father Abdullah suffered critical injuries in the attack, said the OC.

He was then rushed to the Raipura Upazila Health Complex, where a doctor declared him dead.

The body has been sent to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital’s morgue for autopsy on Saturday morning.

The health and family planning officer of Raipura Upazila Health Complex, Khan Nuruddin Md Jahangir, said that Md Abdullah was brought dead to the health complex from Banshgari at night.

In front of the morgue at the hospital, the son of the deceased, Russell Mia, alleged: “Although we were assaulted over a trivial matter, there is another reason behind it. As we are not affiliated with any particular group in the area, the local UP member Ershad's group has been demanding a large sum of money from us. Recently, they asked us for Tk3 lakh. When we refused to pay, Anwar, an active member of Ershad’s group, led this attack and murder. There are at least 15 cases against Ershad, including murder.”

To inquire about the allegations, multiple calls were made to the mobile number used by UP member Ershad in the Char area of Raipura. During this time, his mobile number was found to be switched off.

Additionally, Anwar’s mobile number was also unreachable. Since the incident, Ershad has reportedly left the area with his family, locking their home.

The OC said that there are injury marks on the body of the deceased.

Efforts are underway to arrest the accused individuals, including the UP member. A case will be filed if a written complaint is received.
