A dawn-to-dusk road blockade program was underway in Khagrachhari on Thursday to protest the killing of three United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) activists in Panchari.
Intercity buses and other regional transport, as a result, including those on the Dhaka-Chittagong route, were halted, along with inter-district and local road traffic.
However, limited movement of vehicles was noticed around the city and suburban areas.
Additionally, night buses from Dhaka and other locations entered Khagrachhari under police escort.
Reports indicate picketing in several areas in support of the blockade, though no untoward incidents have occurred so far.
Security has been tightened in critical areas.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Abu Zafar Mohammad Saleh said additional forces have been deployed at key points in the district and various upazilas to prevent any untoward incidents during the blockade.
On Wednesday morning, three UPDF activists—Sizan Chakma, Shason Tripura, and Joyen Chakma—were killed in Panchari by unidentified assailants.
In response to this incident, the organization called a day-long road blockade in the district.
