A college student was killed after being struck by an S Alam Paribahan bus on the Chittagong-Rangamati highway in Raozan on Tuesday.
The deceased is Sabbir Uddin, 17, a 12th-grade student at Raozan Government Technical School and College and son of Nazim Uddin from the Mohammadpur area of the upazila.
The incident occurred in front of the college around noon.
Following the accident, students from the college blocked the Chittagong-Rangamati highway for around two and a half hours in protest, halting bus traffic until 2:30pm.
The road was reopened after intervention from the army and police.
The protesting students demanded that the bus driver responsible be arrested within 24 hours.
“Our friend died in an accident due to a careless driver. We demand immediate justice. If the driver is not arrested, we will resume our protest,” one student said.
They also called for a zebra crossing and a footbridge in front of the school to ensure student safety.
Suman Chakraborty, an employee of the college, said: “We took Sabbir to JK Memorial Hospital in Gahira immediately after the accident, but his condition worsened, and he passed away while being transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.”
Raozan Highway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Asaduzzaman Howladar said: “The student was hit while crossing the road by an S Alam Paribahan bus heading from Rangamati to Chittagong city. He later died from his injuries while being transported to the hospital. The bus has been impounded, though the driver fled the scene. Efforts are underway to arrest him and to address the students' safety demands.”
