Some 27 sacks of rice from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has been seized while being smuggled in white plastic sacks instead of being sold in its original jute sacks.

A team of army seized the rice after being informed by local residents.

However, no one was arrested in connection with the incident. This occurred in the Gaokandia Union of Durgapur Upazila in Netrokona.

The incident was confirmed through a press release sent by the Netrokona army camp at around 3pm on Thursday.

According to the release, on Wednesday night, at around 9pm, 27 sacks of TCB rice were being smuggled by boat in Gaokandia Union of Durgapur Upazila, instead of being sold to general consumers.

Local residents intercepted the rice and informed the army camp. Under the supervision of the army, with the help of local people and village police, the boat was brought to Durgapur Teribazar Ghat.

The boat contained 1,090 kilograms of rice in 27 sacks of various weights, with an estimated market value of around Tk43,600. To avoid detection, the government rice sacks were hidden inside white plastic sacks.

In this regard, Durgapur Upazila Food Controller Mahmuda Akter Munni has filed a case with the local police station.

The case names Shahjahan Mia, TCB dealer from Shankarpara village of Gaokandia Union, and Siddiq Mia from Munshipara village of the same union as the accused buyers.

The seized rice has been handed over to the police, according to the press release.
