Five held for catching ilish in Padma River

Five people have been detained for illegal ilish fishing in a drive conducted in the Padma River in the Shibchar upazila of Madaripur.

During the operation, authorities seized four batteries, two controllers, and 20,000 meters of fishing nets from a trawler.

The operation took place from midnight to dawn on Saturday, targeting various locations along the Padma River, led by the Upazila Fisheries Office.

According to sources from the Fisheries Office, the administration is taking a strict stance to protect mother ilish during the breeding season.

A team from the Charjanajat River Police and the Fisheries Office, under the leadership of Senior Fisheries Officer Ferdous Ibn Rahim, conducted the operation.

During this time, they apprehended five fishermen along with their nets, batteries, controllers, and fish, subsequently destroying the seized nets by burning them.

The arrested fishermen faced various penalties for their actions.

Ibn Rahim also mentioned that this year's operations would be even more intensified compared to the previous year to ensure that no one can catch mother ilish from the Padma River during the prohibited period.
