Train hits elephant herd in Chittagong, one injured

An elephant sustained serious injuries after being struck by a passenger train in Lohagara upazila in Chittagong.

The incident took place around 8:30pm on Sunday when a Chittagong-bound train from Cox’s Bazar collided with a herd of elephants near the Elephant Overpass in the Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary, said Mahmud Hossain, range officer of Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary.

Forest department sources said: “A group of five-six elephants was hit from behind by the speeding train as they crossed the railway track. A 10-year-old female elephant suffered a broken front right leg, as well as spine and head injuries, after being struck by the Cox’s Bazar Special (Train No. 10). The impact caused the elephant to collapse on the tracks, while the rest of the herd fled the scene.”

Range Officer Mahmud Hossain said: "Our team rushed to the site upon receiving information about the injured elephant. The elephant, weighing around two tons, is receiving full medical care. If necessary, it will be transferred to Dulahazara Safari Park for further treatment."
