3 suspects in student protest killings held while fleeing to India

Border Guard Bangladesh (47 BGB) members have detained three people accused of being involved in sabotage and killings during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, while they were trying to flee to India via the Kushtia border.

The arrests were confirmed late Friday night by Lieutenant Colonel Md Mahbub Morshed Rahman, commander of the 47th BGB Kushtia Battalion.

The detainees have been identified as Md Rashedul Islam, 37,  Md Rezaul Islam, 30, and Md Aminul Islam Dabul, 42.

According to Lt Colonel Rahman, the three, who are also involved in both drug trafficking and killings, had taken refuge at the house of Md Akbar Ali, 55, in Atarpara village, approximately 100 yards inside Bangladesh from border pillar 84/5-S in the Udaynagar BOP area.

They were intending to cross the border into India illegally.

Acting on a tip-off, the BGB launched a search operation and apprehended the accused while they were hiding near the border.

The BGB commander further explained that Rashedul Islam faces charges in four murder cases, five sabotage cases, and 11 cases of criminal activities.

His accomplice, Rezaul Islam, has been charged with four drug-related cases, four motorcycle theft cases, and two extortion cases.

Meanwhile, Aminul Islam Dabul has one drug-related case against him.

Lt Colonel Rahman also said that two of the detainees are implicated in sabotage and killings during the anti-discrimination protests on August 5 and afterward.

Legal proceedings are ongoing to file cases against the accused at Daulatpur police station, as per regulations.

In light of the criminal profiles and the sensitivity of the accused’s offenses, a special police patrol team from Natore district is coordinating a rapid transfer operation using a prison van from Daulatpur police station.
