A group of students from Jagannath University on Monday demanded a ban on the political activities of Chhatra League, condemning the organization as a source of oppression.
The call was made during a memorial event marking the fifth anniversary of Abrar Fahad's tragic death.
Riazul Islam, a Law department student, paid tribute to Abrar, saying: "Chhatra League’s oppressive tactics have silenced students who wish to express their opinions freely. Abrar became a martyr due to their brutality. We demand justice, not just for him but for all students whose rights have been violated. His death was the result of Chhatra League’s inhumanity, and those responsible must be held accountable. The student body has already rejected them."
Masud, a Physics department student, echoed the demand to ban Chhatra League, saying: "Abrar Fahad is our pride, our martyr. He gave his life defending the nation’s sovereignty. Chhatra League thugs murdered him simply because he spoke out for the country’s welfare. It’s terrifying to think a student was beaten to death for his beliefs. We must put an end to BCL’s criminal activities, not just at JnU but across all campuses."
Islamic Studies student Abrar Hamim shared his own experiences of Chhatra League harassment, saying: "Ordinary students constantly lived in fear of BCL’s violence. Some faculty members were complicit. Because of my social media activities, I was repeatedly harassed, falsely accused of being part of Shibir, and targeted by the Detective Branch (DB), with no support from the university administration. Countless students have suffered similar abuse. The administration even handed over fellow student Nur Nabi to the DB. These wrongs must be addressed."
The memorial event in honor of Abrar Fahad was led by Tawsif Mahmud Sohan from the 12th batch, with Rakib Hasan serving as the host. Several student leaders spoke, including Chhatra Dal assistant organizing secretary Mahid Khan, joint general secretary Nahiyan Bin Anik, senior joint general secretary Mehedi Hasan Himel.
