The National Security Intelligence and a customs intelligence team have seized a large amount of foreign currencies, equivalent to around Tk2.44 crore, found in the bag of a passenger bound for Dubai in a joint operation at Chittagong's Shah Amanat International Airport.
Authorities detained the passenger, Zakir Hossain, a resident of Bangshal, Dhaka, with the money on US-Bangla Airlines international flight BS-343 on Thursday morning.
Md Ibrahim Khalil, public relations officer of the airport, confirmed the information.
Among the foreign currencies recovered were 770,000 Saudi riyals and 46,000 UAE dirhams.
Ibrahim said Zakir had boarded the flight from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, scheduled to fly from Dhaka to Chittagong and then to Dubai.
“The passenger was seated on the plane when the NSI, acting on a tip-off, entered the aircraft and detained him with the foreign currencies. A case will be filed against him under the Money Laundering Prevention Act with Patenga model police station,” he added.
