Miscreants vandalize Noakhali shrine

Miscreants have vandalized the shrine of Fakir Charu Miji Shah (R) located in Laxminarayanpur of Noakhali municipality.

It has been alleged that the shrine was vandalized under the leadership Bijoy. He is the son of the general secretary of the shrine committee.

A group of 18 to 20 people vandalized the shrine at 9am on Friday.

Several attempts were made to contact the accused, Bijoy, but his cell number was found switched off.

Abu Naser, president of the shrine committee and president of Noakhali municipal BNP, said: "I went to the spot after receiving the news. There was no anti-social activity in our shrine. We have bought about an acre of land in the name of this shrine. I heard that the shrine was attacked this morning under the leadership of Bijoy.

“Bijoy is associated with Awami League politics. Now he says they liberated the country. When his father asked him about the vandalism of the shrine, he said that the shrine is bid'ah (In Islam, it refers to innovation in religious matters), so they vandalized it.”

He added: "The situation is normal now. Necessary legal action will be taken against the culprits and necessary steps will be taken to renovate the shrine.”

About 250 years ago, an elderly man named Miji Shah was buried in the Lakshminarayanpur Dargah house.

Later, the devotees built a shrine around his grave. Every year a month-long fair was organized there. However, no large-scale activities were carried out throughout the rest of the year.
