Members of the Garo community have demanded the withdrawal of a case filed against 12 people, including the president of Joyenshahi Adivasi Unnayan Parishad in Madhupur, Tangail.
Joyenshahi Adivasi Unnayan Parishad is a human rights organisation of Madhupur's local Adivasi communities.
The program was joined by members of Joyenshahi Adivasi Unnayan Parishad, Sarbik Manab Unnayan Sangstha, Achik Michik Society (AMS), a section of the Tribal Welfare Association, Koch Adivasi Sangathan, a section of Bangladesh Garo Sangathan, and the Garo Student Federation.
They formed a human chain on the upazila parishad premises, submitted a memorandum to the district administration, and demanded unconditional release of the arrestees on Tuesday.
Speakers at the program said a baseless case was filed against Eugene Nokrek, the president of Joyenshahi Adivasi Unnayan Parishad, and 11 others. When they appeared before the court on September 5, the court sent them to jail in the case filed over tree theft.
The speakers termed the case false and a means to suppress the rightful movement of the tribal people.
