Extortion from truck: Chittagong Jubo Dal leader expelled after arrest

The youth wing of the BNP, Jubo Dal, expelled its Sitakunda Upazila unit convener Md Fazlul Karim Chowdhury in Chittagong on Saturday, hours after he was caught by the army personnel for stopping a truck for extortion.

The expulsion was confirmed by a press release signed by Nurul Islam Sohel, office secretary of the Central Executive Committee of Jubo Dal, on Saturday night.

Fazlul Karim was also stripped of primary membership in the party. Jubo Dal Central Executive Committee President Abdul Monayem Munna and General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayan have already implemented this decision, the press release added.

In the afternoon, the army apprehended Fazlul Karim and another when they stopped a truck carrying imported iron scrap and demanded money. The army personnel later handed them over to the police. The incident took place in Wapda area of ​​Halishahar area.

The truck belonging to Abul Khair Company was carrying the iron scrap from the port through the port link road. Some street children and teenagers got onto the vehicle and were throwing iron scraps on the road. Noticing the matter, the driver stopped in Wapda area and got down the truck. When he was questioning the children, Fazlul Karim appeared at one stage and pressured the truck driver to have Abul Khair's senior management talk to him.

At one stage of the argument, a patrol team of the Halishahar police station stopped at the spot. But Fazlul Karim got into an argument with the police. In this situation, the police members called the army, who eventually detained Fazlul and an accomplice. Later, the duo were taken to the police station.

Halishahar police Inspector (Investigation) Mojahidul Islam said: "The army members have detained the two and handed them over to us. We do not know anything about their political identity. We will take legal action against them.
