3 bus passengers die in Bangabandhu Bridge accident

Three people were killed and eight others injured when a bus collided with a truck on Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj early Saturday.

The accident occurred near pillar number 13 of the bridge when a Dhaka Express Paribahan bus from Sirajganj lost control and crashed into the rear of a truck, according to Abdul Quader Jilani, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bangabandhu Bridge West police station.

The deceased have been identified as Rahiz Uddin, his son Ripu, 26, both from Pipulbaria area of Bagbati Union in Sadar upazila, and Chandra Shekhar, son of Sushant Shekhar from Banbaria village in the same upazila.

"The front of the bus was crushed, killing three passengers instantly. Seven others were injured. Police responded quickly, rescuing the injured and transporting them to the hospital," OC Jilani said.

He added that the bus was removed from the scene to restore traffic flow, but the truck fled immediately after the incident.

Dr Faisal Ahmed of Sirajganj's 250-bed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital confirmed that the bodies have been kept in the morgue.

He added: "Some of the injured received first aid and left, while three remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition."
