Several Brahmanbaria villages remain waterlogged, locals demand urgent relief

Brahmanbaria's Kasba, an upazila bordering India's Tripura state, remains inundated following a recent flash flood.

Several villages in the Mandabhag Bazar area of Kayempur union are still underwater, leaving at least 300 families in dire conditions.

Despite receiving some relief from both government and non-government sources, residents say the aid is insufficient.

Local administration and affected families said that on August 21, a torrent of water “from India” submerged 73 villages in the Kasba and Akhaura upazilas.

The flooding impacted at least 4,000 families across the two areas.

While the water receded on August 25, more than 300 families in the border villages of Mandabhag and Konaghat, including those in a local shelter project, remain trapped by the floodwaters.

Mohammad Abu Kalam, a resident of Mandabhag, said: "Our area is low-lying. Water has entered our homes, submerging everything. We are living in miserable conditions, trapped by the floodwaters. We urge the government to fill the low-lying areas with soil."

Another resident, Habiba Akter, echoed these concerns, noting that the relief provided was inadequate. "We are suffering greatly. There's still knee-deep water in our homes. We appeal to the higher authorities for urgent attention."

Zainal Mia, who resides in the local shelter project, voiced similar demands for relief and attention.

Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Shahariar Moktar acknowledged the ongoing issue, explaining that rising water levels in the neighbouring Brahmanpara upazila of Comilla had worsened the situation in low-lying areas.

He said necessary steps were being taken to address the situation.

The flood has affected at least 30,000 people from 2,500 families across 26 villages in Kasba upazila.
