Bodies piled onto van: Police form 4-member probe body

The police have formed a four-member probe committee to investigate the incident of piling up dead bodies on a van in Savar on August 5.

Ahmed Mueed, superintendent of police in Dhaka, visited the Ashulia police station on Sunday. He said the committee is headed by an additional superintendent of police. However, he did not reveal the names of the committee members.

He said the viral video has come to the attention of the Bangladesh Police.

“We are doing whatever we can. An investigation committee has already been formed and they are looking into the matter. We got everyone's cooperation,” he added.

He said that he has seen the video footage, but has not yet received the physical evidence.

Responding to a question whether a case will be filed against the police involved in the matter, Ahmed Mueed said the police are not outside the law.

He said: “Not only the students, but also many of our policemen were also burnt to death. There will also be a police murder case. The chief adviser has issued a clear instruction that serious action will be taken against human rights violators.”

On Friday, a video went viral on social media. The first 20 seconds of the video show a lifeless body lying on the road. Around the 20-second mark, several more bodies were seen piled on a nearby van, with one of the bodies visibly bloodied on the face and two others with arms outstretched.

The video ends with the bodies still piled on the van, and around 6-7 police officers standing nearby.

During the street protests on August 5, at least 31 people, including students and three police members, were killed. Another 15 people injured the same day died later while undergoing treatment.
