Although floodwaters have receded in 12 unions of Feni Sadar upazila, the affected residents are struggling to return to normal life, with numerous mud and makeshift houses washed away, leaving many homes uninhabitable.
A visit to South Chonua village of Chonua union revealed that the floodwaters had receded, but the roads were badly damaged, and many homes had been destroyed.
Almost every village in the 12 unions of the upazila remained submerged for six consecutive days.
Many flood-affected people are still taking shelter in roadside shops.
Residents of South Chonua village said they had stayed in a shelter for seven days.
There, they were provided good food for the children. But when they returned home, they found that they had nothing left – no living quarters, no cow sheds.
The devastating flood, caused by “an onrush of water from upstream in India,” had taken away everything, they added.
In the nearby village of Krishnamandar in Forhadnogor union, the situation is even more dire – nearly all the mud houses have been damaged by the surge of water from the Feni River.
Cattle, ducks, and chickens from several farms have been swept away by the floodwaters. Fish ponds and crops have also been destroyed.
According to villagers, the entire village was flooded in a single night, with no mud house left intact.
All the domestic animals – ducks, chickens, cattle and goats – had been swept away by the currents, they said.
The affected residents said they were determined to rebuild, but they needed humanitarian assistance to recover.
