The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to 46 leaders and activists of the BNP, including former lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib, who was sentenced to 70 years in prison in a case filed over the attack on then-opposition leader Sheikh Hasina's convoy in 2002.
As a result, there is no obstacle to the release of the convicts in the case.
Habib's wife and Supreme Court lawyer Shahanara Akhtar Bakul said, in the case filed in 2002, the court sentenced 50 BNP leaders and activists, including the former MP, to various terms under the Arms and Explosives Act.
Among them, Habib was given the maximum sentence of 70 years in prison. After the convicts appealed against the lower court verdict, the High Court granted them bail.
