The Kaptai Hydro-Electric Power Plant in Rangamati will open 16 gates at 8am on Sunday as water levels in Kaptai Lake reach near the danger mark.
Earlier in the day, the authorities announced and scheduled to release the water on Saturday night, but they did not release the water as planned.
Kaptai Power Development Board Manager ATM Abdul Zahir confirmed the matter.
The current water level is 107.66 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL). The dam will open 16 gates by 6 inches to release water from the lake, releasing 9,000 cubic feet of water every second.
The notice they issued earlier also says the inflow of water and rainfall are being observed closely. If necessary, the gates will be lowered further.
Currently, 32,000 cubic feet of water is being released every second from the dam to produce electricity.
Ragamati Power Development Board Executive Engineer Mohammad Jalal Uddin said: “There is no need to panic. Only an additional 9,000 cfs of water is being released in addition to the current 32,000 cfs.”
Jalal said: “Around 200,000 cfs of water is coming to the lake due to recent heavy rainfall. According to him, today’s (Saturday) in-flow is lower at 150,000 cfs.”
Kaptai Upazilla Nirbari Officer MD Mohi Uddin told Dhaka Tribune: “Only a limited amount of water will be released, Karnafuli River has handled more than that.”
“As they have said, this is not a matter of concern,” he added.
