Abdul Rahman Bodi, the controversial Awami League politician of Teknaf in Cox's Bazar and former member of parliament for the Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhiya-Teknaf) constituency, has been arrested.
The arrest took place from GEC intersection under Panchlaish police station of Chittagong city around 8pm on Tuesday.
RAB-7 Media Officer Shariful Islam confirmed the matter, saying, Bodi was arrested based on secret information.
Details regarding the arrest will be shared later.
According to RAB sources, Bodi is being taken to Cox's Bazar where he will be shown arrested in connection with previous cases filed against him.
On May 3, 2024, Bodi was accused of shooting at a chairman aspirant ahead of the Teknaf Upazila Parishad polls.
The incident allegedly took place in Moheshkhali Para area of Whykong union.
On August 16, a case was filed against Bodi, and 32 others on charges of vandalism, looting and attack on businesses in Teknaf.
Bodi was named as the "kingpin" of yaba trafficking on the list prepared by the Department of Narcotics Control.
In a June 2015 report, Bodi topped the list of 79 leading human traffickers of Cox's Bazar according the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Abdur Rahman Bodi was a former MP of the Cox's Bazar-4 constituency during 2009–2019.
Bodi did not get the party's nomination for the 2018 general election.
Instead, his wife, Shahin Akhtar, did and went on to win the election and became the incumbent member of the same constituency.
On December 17, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Bodi for hiding information of Tk5,611,500 and amassing Tk79.37 lakh from unknown sources of income.
Later, when the accused secured a stay order from the High Court.
Later, the proceedings of the case were halted for a long time.
After filing an appeal against this order, the proceedings of the case finally resumed in 2017.
After that, the defendant applied to the Chittagong District Judge Court seeking exemption from the case.
Rejecting that appeal, the court ordered the resumption of the trial on September 13, 2020, by framing the charges against Bodi.
