At least 16 inmates were injured as some prisoners of Gazipur District Jail tried to revolt following the release of some politically affiliated inmates on Thursday.
Thirteen inmates and three prison guards were among the injured.
Jailer Mushfiqur Rahman told UNB that some political prisoners walked out of jail after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina led government recently.
The other prison inmates, who were convicted in different cases including robbery, staged demonstrations for not getting released from the jail on Thursday morning.
At one stage, they set fire to the beds and furniture and tried to flee the jail.
Later, the prison guards charged batons and fired bullets to quell the clash, leaving 16 inmates injured.
The shooting erupted at the jail around 11am on Thursday.
Gazipur District Jail Superintendent Anwarul Karim confirmed the incident around 12:30pm.
He said: "Suddenly, riots started in the prison. Now, the situation is somewhat under control. We will provide the details later."
Meanwhile, common people and passers-by in the area are fearful due to the gunfire at the jail.
Besides, Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala has been withdrawn and Main Uddin has been appointed as the new jail superintendent in connection with the escape of prisoners from Kashimpur Jail.
The new prison superintendent was appointed in his place on Thursday morning. He was withdrawn after failing to provide security in the case of prisoner protests and escapes. Subrata Kumar Bala himself confirmed his removal and the charge of the new jail superintendent.
