Rajshahi City Corporation Ward Councillor and Rajshahi Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Rajab Ali, along with his associate Zakir Hossain, were detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at the Darshana ICP check post in Chuadanga while attempting to flee the country.
The detentions occurred around 1pm on Wednesday.
Chuadanga-6 BGB Director Lt Col Syed Mohammad Zahidur Rahman confirmed the information.
Rajab Ali, 50, is the son of Moazzem Hossain of the Guripara area under Rajpara police station in Rajshahi district and serves as the general secretary of Rajshahi Metropolitan Ward No. 1 Awami League. Zakir Hossain, 34, is the son of Ali Reza Togar of the same area and is an active member of the Awami League. The two men are cousins.
According to sources at the Darshana ICP check post, BGB personnel became suspicious when the two attempted to cross into India on Wednesday morning. They were detained and interrogated, during which they admitted to fleeing the country.
