Sculpture of Venus destroyed in Mymensingh’s Soshi Lodge

The white-marbled statue, Venus, was standing in the garden of Soshi Lodge for more than 200 years until Monday, when a mob demolished it while celebrating the resignation of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina from the office of prime minister.

Maharaja Shashikant Acharya's palace, which is situated in the centre of Mymensingh city, is called Soshi Lodge. It is locally known as Mymensingh Rajbari.

In front of the lodge there is a garden that was adorned with various species and fountains. Among them there was a sculpture of the bathing Greek goddess Venus.

Some religion-based party activists had long been demanding the removal of the statue, terming it un-Islamic.

In Dhaka, jubilant people also demolished the statue of Themes erected in front of the Supreme Court. There had been a lot of protests at the time of the installation of the statue. Later, it was relocated to another place on the apex court premises.

When the news of Sheikh Hasina's resignation spread across Mymensingh, some people broke through the main gate and entered the garden.

They attacked the fountains and the sculptures.

Sabina Yasmin, supervisor of the museum inside the lodge, said that hundreds of people attacked and vandalized the place. The head of the Venus statue was not found later on.

Following the incident, netizens have been criticizing the attackers for not sparing the rare Venus sculpture after photos and videos of people destroying it went viral on social media.

One of the comments on a Facebook post read that the sculpture was worth millions of dollars and it was now non-existent.

Representatives of civil society visited the spot on Tuesday afternoon. One of them, Rezaul Karim Aslam, general secretary of Mymensingh Baul Association, said that miscreants took away the head of the sculpture during the attack.
